Treloar Physiotherapy Clinic: Fraser Perry

MPT, FCAMPT, IMS

What is your background & training?

I attended UBC for both my Undergrad in Human Kinetics and my Masters of Physiotherapy. I am still involved as an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Medicine teaching both manual therapy skills and Anatomy to Physio students.

What inspired you to choose this career path?

I chose Physiotherapy as a career path because it combines two of my passions: Movement and Teaching.

I am passionate about movement because I believe that, like a personality trait, it defines who we are. Similar to individual fingerprints, we all have unique movement patterns. When you have an injury or have pain, your brain changes the way you move in order to avoid that pain, for example limping.  Although effective at avoiding pain initially, these compensation strategies are not optimal in the long run, and might even make other areas of the body susceptible to injury.

Whether it’s for immediate pain management or future pain prevention, optimal movement has the ability to enhance one’s quality of life because of both it’s physical and psychological effects on the body.  From personal experience with injuries I know that they can affect self esteem, self image and confidence. If you’re not moving like yourself, you don’t feel like yourself.

Remember that movement is a personality trait and a way that we can actively express ourselves. Being a physiotherapist is more than simply treating a sprained ankle, it involves addressing the whole person – the compensations due to pain, possible return to work strategies, self management strategies and more, to ensure that the client feels like themselves again. As a result, being a Physio is a very super-cool and REWARDING job.
