Treloar Physiotherapy Clinic: Mikaela Barnes

BSc (Kin), MPT, Clinical Pilates, Certified Yoga Instructor & Kids Yoga Training

What is your background & training?

I grew up in Renfrew, Ontario and moved to Burnaby after completing a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology in 2016 and Master of Physical Therapy in 2018, both at Western University. I became a Certified Yoga Instructor in 2015 and recently completed a Kids Yoga Training certification. Additional courses include, Soft Tissue and Myofascial Release courses, Motivational Interviewing for Health Care Professionals and I am currently pursuing post-graduate courses with the Canadian Division of Orthopaedic Manual Therapy.

What inspired you to choose this career path?

Growing up with my mom’s passion as a physiotherapist, I was exposed to and inspired by the profession of physiotherapy at a young age. Physiotherapy combines my joy of teaching with the opportunity to work with clients to optimize function and pursue their lifestyle goals.

Why do you choose to work at Treloar?

Treloar exemplifies the power of a collaborative therapist-client approach and best fits my clinical approach to cultivate lasting change for clients through individualized exercise programs and use of manual techniques. I continually wish to grow and be inspired as a physiotherapist and I am so excited to work alongside such talented therapists and mentors as I complete by orthopaedic manual courses.

What are you personally passionate about?

I have a passion for understanding human movement, promoting body awareness, and working towards efficient motor patterning. I prioritize physical fitness and strive towards a healthy lifestyle, always excited to see the next challenge that my body is capable of in running, cycling, hiking, or (my newest hobby) rock climbing.
