Traditional Chinese Cupping

Cupping is one of the oldest methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine. This technique uses specialized glass cups that create a vacuum effect when placed on your skin. The negative pressure of the suction helps stimulate the flow of blood and oxygen to muscles, balances and regulates the flow of energy (Qi), reduces inflammation and allows for removal of waste build-up in the tissues. Depending on the condition being treated, the cups will be left in place from 20 to 30 minutes. The cups can be either moved in a massage-like fashion by an acupuncturist or remain stationary.

Benefits of Traditional Chinese Cupping

  • Reduction in pain
  • Promote relaxation
  • Help treat respiratory issues and colds
  • Improve digestion

The most common misunderstandings concerning cupping is the misinterpretations of the marks that sometimes result. These marks are not bruises. There is no compression or impact trauma in correctly performed cupping. As the skin under the cup is drawn up, the blood vessels at the surface of the skin expand. The degree of colouring is used as a diagnostic tool by acupuncturists. The marks will disappear within 3-10 days after treatment.

Traditional Chinese Cupping is offered at our Kerrisdale location only.
